Breaker, Breaker! – Circuit Breakers, That Is!

What’s the 411 on Circuit Breakers?

Circuit breakers are an absolute necessity when it comes to a home. We are all concerned about the well being of those that live in our home. This is especially true when it comes to serious matters such as electrical. So then, since they are such a key component in each home, it’s time we learn a little more. What exactly is a circuit breaker, and how does it work? Let’s find out the 411 when it comes to circuit breakers.

So to start, what is a circuit breaker? The circuit breaker is the hub for the electrical currents that go into your home. Power goes from the utility lines, through the electrical meter, and then into the homes panel. What lies inside the panel exactly? The cover known as a “dead front cover” has individual cutouts that give access to each breaker. Behind the dead front cover lies terminals full of wires. While each of the breakers are set to initiate the electricity in different areas of the home, there is also a main breaker. The main breaker has the ultimate control if you will. If you were to shut off the main breaker, it would essentially turn off all the power in the home.

Electrical panels are not a one size fits all. Each home is different and therefore requires a different capacity. Older homes tend to still have 100 amp panels, while nowadays the panels for a single family home are 200 amps. The Spruce says, “A larger panel itself won’t use more electricity. It just means you’ll have more space available for adding circuits and more electrical capacity to supply your household needs as they arise.” If you are in need of a panel upgrade or a replacement, give Riverside Electrical today!
